Do salmon live in the ocean or in freshwater?

Salmon are born in freshwater lakes, rivers, or streams and then most swim out to the ocean, where they live until going back home to spawn.

These salmon have certain lifecycles adapted to living in freshwater, and certain lifecycles adapted to living in ocean saltwater.

There are also some salmon that live exclusively in ponds and lakes.
