Giant-Carlisle and the ChoiceCatch® Program: Sustainable Seafood Improvement Projects

We at GIANT® are dedicated to providing the best quality seafood possible to our consumers while working to protect the world’s oceans and marine resources. Seafood is an important source of protein and as global demand grows, it is imperative that we source from fisheries and farms that allow us to meet our current need without jeopardizing our future. At GIANT® we sell a variety of ocean-friendly seafood choices; however, it is also important to us to improve the overall sustainability of all our products, including those that may currently have some significant environmental impacts. That is why we have partnered with the New England Aquarium, through the ChoiceCatch® program, to buy, sell, and promote seafood that is both good for you and for the environment. By partnering with the New England Aquarium we have access to a staff of skilled experts working on issues of conservation and sustainability surrounding fisheries and aquaculture. We will be working with the New England Aquarium to make improvements with species such as:
Farmed Atlantic salmon , Haddock, Farmed shrimp, Etc…

Salmon is a healthy protein source, high in omega-3 fatty acids and low in saturated fat. The American Heart Association features salmon as a heart healthy choice. At GIANT® we sell both wild Alaskan salmon and farmed Atlantic salmon. Wild Alaskan salmon along with arctic char and U.S. farmed rainbow trout are all ocean-friendly choices that make good substitutes for Atlantic salmon.

In order to provide our customers with a healthy, delicious product—and also protect the environment —we are working with the salmon farms that supply our stores to ensure that they are maintaining their environment and striving to improve the sustainability of their production. In partnership with the New England Aquarium, we are implementing a new program to encourage salmon farms to work towards environmental sustainability. The Farmed Atlantic Salmon Improvement Project will allow us to evaluate the environmental performance of individual farms on important parameters such as pollution, feed, fish health, impacts on other species, and energy use. One of the primary goals of the ChoiceCatch® program is to protect the world’s oceans and advance conservation through improvement in the seafood industry. One way we can do this is by working with our farms to implement best practices and effect positive changes that protect the environment. Furthermore, this program helps ensure we can deliver safe, environmentally friendly, quality products to our consumers.
